    • The X-ray structure refers to the racemic isomer but there is no reason to suppose that the meso form does not exist in solution.

    • This assertion is based on the results of the ESMS studies where it is seen that the 2:2 complex makes only a minor contribution to the overall composition of the system.

    • 1. At early stages of the titration, the experimental conditions are such that the 1:2 complex is favoured but, as the concentration of copper approaches that of L, the equilibrium moves firmly in favour of the 1:1 complex since there will be little free ligand present in solution.

    • This process was followed in the presence of a modest excess of copper in order to prevent ejection of metal ions from the metallo-helicate. The only other cationic species present in solution are the 1:1 and 2:2 complexes. Equilibration between these latter species should be insensitive to the presence of excess copper(I), provided a constant ionic strength is maintained.
