In this paper, women were studied longitudinally before and during pregnancy and, keeping energy and protein intake constant, the authors demonstrated an increase in nitrogen retention as gestation advanced. In contrast to many previous studies, values for retention were slightly lower than theoretical estimates of deposition.

    • Duggleby SL, Jackson AA. Relationship of maternal protein turnover and lean body mass during pregnancy and birth length. Clin Sci 2001; 101:65-72. The largest study of protein turnover carried out in pregnant women enabled the authors to determine for the first time the significance of protein turnover in relation to fetal growth. Mothers with a greater lean body mass (specifically visceral, rather than muscle mass) were found to have higher rates of turnover. Furthermore, rates of turnover were found to be related to the growth of the baby.

This study on 25 pregnant women explored further how protein metabolism might impact on the growth of the fetus. The authors showed that there was an association between the change in amino acid oxidation and the weight of the baby.
