Further experiments, performed since the original submission of this manuscript, show that the major heating mechanism is not recombination heating but Auger heating. Then a decrease in temperature is consistent with a decrease in density. J.-N. Fehr, T. P. Hessler, P. E. Selbmann, M.-A. Dupertuis, B. Deveaud, J.-Y. Emery, and B. Dagens (unpublished).
