    • We have recently reported that the diastereomeric [Ru(salen)(NO)] complex of 1 is an efficient chiral catalyst for aerobic oxidative coupling of 2-naphthol: R. Irie, K. Masutani, T. Katsuki, Synlett 2000, 1433-1436. In this study, the formation of 1-nitro-2-naphthol as a side product was detected, proving that irradiation promoted the dissociation of nitrosyl group (unpublished result). The photolysis product of 1 in dioxane was also studied by MS analysis. However, its mass spectrum was not significantly changed during the usual reaction time (48 h). This suggests that the dissociated nitrosyl group is quickly recombined to ruthenium ion, as reported by Ford and Works (ref. [18]).
