    • When N-methylimidazole was added to a solution of the cobalt(II) complex catalyst and diazoacetate, the color of the solution immediately turned brown. Whereas, when 2-methylimidazole was added to the solution, the color changed little.

    • As an alternative possibility of the acceleration effect of the axial ligand, it should be considered that the transformation of the diazoacetate into the cobalt carbene complex could be accelerated by the coordination of N-methylimidazole to the cobalt(II) complex.

    • Not only the polarity of the solvents, but the other factors, such as the donating and accepting nature of the solvent depended on its heteroatom and/or functional group of coordination, the environment around the complex influenced by the solvent, and the side reactions between the solvent and the diazoester or between the solvent and the cobalt carbene complex, would play important roles for the enhancement of the reaction rate and the improvement of the stereoselectivities. Therefore, it is reasonable that the correlation between the dielectric constant and stereoselectivities could not be observed among different types of solvents. On the contrary, these factors should be similar or have a relation with the dielectric constant in a series of alcohols. Therefore, the correlation between the dielectric constant and enantioselectivity could be observed.
