Bahlmann K, Jakobs S, Hell SW : 4pi-confocal microscopy of live cells. Ultramicroscopy 2001, 87:155-164. These authors describe how 4pi-confocal microscopy is used to image live Escherichia coli. The axial resolution of the instrument is demonstrated to be at least four times better than the best water-immersion confocal microscope. The images presented of live bacteria have an all-direction resolution in the range of 190-280nm.

A theoretical physicist with an interest in quantum events, Maria Goeppert-Mayer predicted that co-absorption of two photons could fulfil the energy requirement of a quantum event. Her work on the 'shell model' of atomic nuclei gained her and her collaborator Hans Hensen the 1963 Nobel prize for physics.

The authors describe a novel indicator for chloride ions produced by fusing the chloride-sensitive yellow-fluorescent protein with the chloride-insensitive cyan-fluorescent protein. The ratio of FRET-dependent emission was used to measure intracellular chloride concentration in cultured hippocampal neurones.
