26. Note that in the standard theory of atomic motion in laser light corrections appear when the atomic excitation becomes significant [25]. By comparing with numerical calculations for the parameters of the cavity QED experiment of [10] we find that in the weak excitation limit the free-space theory prediction for the diffusion is about two orders of magnitude too small. Increasing the pump rate of the cavity steadily reduces the difference, and vanishes for a particular value of the driving intensity. This is where the experiment of [10] was performed. We emphasize that for higher excitation of the atom, as in the experiment of [11], the free-space theory starts overestimating the diffusion. Only in the limit of very high excitation, does the diffusion coefficient predicted by the cavity QED theory converge with the free-space result.
