    • Imprinting of the MEDEA polycomb gene in the Arabidopsis endosperm
    • The expression of MEDEA - a gene essential for seed development - is examined in both the developing embryo and endosperm, using allele specific RT-PCR assays. Expression of the paternal allele was limited to embryonic and vegetative tissues indicating that the paternal allele of this gene is normally repressed in endosperm. This is the first demonstration of imprinted expression of a gene that is essential for plant development.

Mutation of DDM1 resulted in rescue of seed inheriting a mutated maternal copy of mea, indicating that imprinting is lost in these plants; loss of imprinting could be a result of changes in chromatin structure or DNA methylation as both are likely to be altered in ddm1 plants.
