Pediatrics 1999, 104:91-99. This prospective, multicenter randomized trial, comparing a 3-day course of early dexamethasone therapy with placebo therapy showed that early dexamethasone therapy increases survival without CLD. Mortality rates were not significantly different. Early intestinal perforation was common among the subjects in the group treated with dexamethasone.

This multicenter RCT done in 80 premature infants with severe acute respiratory failure reported that low dose INO improved oxygenation at 60 minutes after treatment but did not improve survival. • Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn in the era before nitric oxide; practice variation and outcomes
    • 52 Walsh-Sukys MC, Tyson JE, Wright LL, Bauer CR, Korones SB, Stevenson DK, et al.: Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn in the era before nitric oxide; practice variation and outcomes. Pediatr 2000, 105:14-26. This group retrospectively looked at different treatments methods used in PPHN before using INO. Hyperventilation was used in 65% of patients studied, continuous alkali infusion used in 75%. Other treatments included sedation, paralysis, inotrope administration, and vasodilator drugs. Despite wide variation in practice, there was no significant difference in mortality among centers.
