    • 50 Barbaro G, Di Lorenzo G, Asti A, Ribersani M, Belloni G, Grisorio B, et al. Hepatocellular mitochondrial alterations in patients with chronic hepatitis C: ultrastructural and biochemical findings. Am J Gastroenterol 1999; 94:2198-2205. These authors observed mitochondrial abnormalities in liver biopsies obtained from persons with chronic HCV infection. HCV genotype 1b in particular was associated with decreased mtDNA.
