13. The cl transgene was previously characterized in C57BL/6 mice (12). However, because this strain of mice does not produce pineal melatonin [S. Ebihara, T. Marks, D. J. Hudson, M. Menaker. Science 231, 491 (1986)], we introduced this transgene into the C3H/ He strain by at least nine generations of backcrossing.
