Parathyroid hormone leads to the lysosomal degradation of the renal type II Na/Pi cotransporter
-
Pfister MK, Ruf I, Stange G, Ziegler U, Lederer E, Biber J. Parathyroid hormone leads to the lysosomal degradation of the renal type II Na/Pi cotransporter. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A 1998; 95:1909-1914. The authors demonstrate that PTH-stimulated endocytic retrieval of Npt2 protein from the renal brush border membrane is followed by proteolytic degradation of Npt2 protein in the late endosomal/lysosomal fraction of proximal tubular cells. These data suggest that internalized Npt2 protein is not recycled to the BBM.

Pfister MF, Hilfiker H, Forgo J, Lederer E, Biber J, Murer H. Cellular mechanisms involved in the acute adaptation of OK cell Na/Pi-cotransport to high- or low-Pi medium. Pflügers Arch 1998; 435:713-719. The authors show that both acute and chronic exposure of OK cells to low Pi elicits an increase in Npt2 protein but not Npt2 mRNA, and that exposure to high Pi leads to lysozomal degradation of internalized Npt2 protein.

Immunodetection of a type III sodium-dependent phosphate cotransporter in tissues and OK cells
-
Boyer CJC, Baines AD, Beaulieu E, Beliveau R. Immunodetection of a type III sodium-dependent phosphate cotransporter in tissues and OK cells. Biochim Biophys Acta 1998; 1368:73-83. The immunodetection of Glvr-1 in a variety of murine tissues is described. In addition, the study demonstrates that low Pi has no effect on the abundance of Glvr-1 protein.

Characterization of a murine type II sodium-phosphate cotransporter expressed in mammalian small intestine
-
+-Pi cotransporter gene (type IIb) that is expressed in the intestinal BBM, is homologous to Npt2 at the N-terminal but not the C-terminal end, and has the functional characteristics of an intestinal Pi transporter. The authors postulate that the type IIb transporter serves intestinal Pi absorption.

In vivo expression of transcripts encoding the Glvr-1 phosphate transporter/retroviral receptor during bone development
-
Palmer G, Zhao J, Bonjour J, Hofstetter W, Caverzasio J. In vivo expression of transcripts encoding the Glvr-1 phosphate transporter/retroviral receptor during bone development. Bone 1999; 24:1-7. The authors show, by in-situ hybridization, that Glvr-1 mRNA is expressed in hypertrophic chondrocytes, but not in osteoblasts, of developing embryonic murine endochondral bone. On the basis of these results, they suggest that Glvr-1 may play a role in bone matrix calcification.
