This report also describes the results of crossing SR-BI null knockout mice into the apolipoprotein E knockout background. In the double knockout animals fed a chow diet, atherosclerotic lesion development is significantly accelerated relative to the single knockout animal controls, thus demonstrating that SR-BI plays a protective role in the development of atherosclerosis.

Under these conditions the transgenic mice developed less atherosclerosis than the nontransgenic mice, demonstrating that SR-BI is atheroprotective.
