Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1999; 96:9322-9327. •• This study, using knockout mice, demonstrates that in the absence of SR-BI female fertility is impaired. This report also describes the results of crossing SR-BI null knockout mice into the apolipoprotein E knockout background. In the double knockout animals fed a chow diet, atherosclerotic lesion development is significantly accelerated relative to the single knockout animal controls, thus demonstrating that SR-BI plays a protective role in the development of atherosclerosis.

J Biol Chem 1999; 274:2366-2371. •• This study used transgenic mice with liver-specific overexpression of SR-BI crossed into a heterozygous LDL receptor knockout background and fed a high fat/high cholesterol/bile salt-containing diet. Under these conditions the transgenic mice developed less atherosclerosis than the nontransgenic mice, demonstrating that SR-BI is atheroprotective.
