J Natl Cancer Inst 1998; 90:1072-1079. In invasive bladder cancer, p21 expression was found in 64% of tumours. P21 expression was of more prognostic value than p53 expression, in line with earlier findings that p53 may be less important for prognosis. Surprisingly, however, unlike other studies, p21 overexpression was correlated with improved prognosis.

Bcl-2 expression was correlated with tumour progression in invasive tumours, independently of p53 expression. In a small study comparing 19 pTa and 23 invasive tumours no difference was found in immunohistochemically assessed expression of bcl-2, bcl-X, or pRb. P53 expression was approximately seven times more frequent in invasive disease. A tendency existed towards bcl-X expression in p53-negative tumours.
