Eur Urol 1998; 33:278-284. P53 and MIB-1 expression were correlated with stage and grade. Surprisingly, no p53 expression was found in carcinoma in situ in this study. When compared with ploidy status and tumour grade, p53 had no additional prognostic value.

J Natl Cancer Inst 1998; 90:1072-1079. In invasive bladder cancer, p21 expression was found in 64% of tumours. P21 expression was of more prognostic value than p53 expression, in line with earlier findings that p53 may be less important for prognosis. Surprisingly, however, unlike other studies, p21 overexpression was correlated with improved prognosis.

This study is Important because different markers are compared.

Bcl-2 expression was correlated with tumour progression in invasive tumours, independently of p53 expression. In superficial tumours, however, p53 was the only predictor of recurrence in a multivariate analysis. One of the (few) recent articles favouring p53 as a marker in superficial bladder cancer.
21. 21 Kirsh EJ, Baunoch DA, Stadler WM. Expression of blc-2 and bcl-X in bladder cancer. J Urol 1998; 159:1348-1353. In a small study comparing 19 pTa and 23 invasive tumours no difference was found in immunohistochemically assessed expression of bcl-2, bcl-X, or pRb. P53 expression was approximately seven times more frequent in invasive disease. A tendency existed towards bcl-X expression in p53-negative tumours.

MIB-1 expression was correlated with invasion of the muscularis mucosae in pT1 bladder tumours. Important with respect to the subdivision of stage T1 tumours.

Relationship among cystectomy, microvessel density and prognosis in stage T1 transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder. J Urol 1998; 160:1285-1290. Microvessel density could not predict prognosis in this group of patients. Interestingly, cystectomy did not influence overall survival. It should be reminded that this is a retrospective study.

31. 31 Mizutani Y, Yoshiba O, Bonavida B. Prognostic significance of soluble Fas in the serum of patients with bladder cancer. J Urol 1998; 160:571-576. Soluble Fas, a splice variant of Fas, antagonizes anti-Fas antibody-mediated and Fas ligand-mediated killing. Soluble Fas, serum levels were elevated in bladder cancer patients. Increased levels are associated with increased tumour recurrence and cancer death. When soluble Fas will be appear to be this important, this article will be a classic.
