J Urol 1998; 159:91-94. These last three articles and their accompanying editorial comments present a preliminary but interesting perspective on the value of flow cytometry and p53 detection.

This article together with the one following it in the same issue of the Journal of Urology, expresses enthusiasm for the immunostaining of exfoliated cells. The editorial comments on these two papers are worth careful reading.

13. Klein A, Zemer R, Buchumensky V, Klaper R. Detection of bladder carcinoma: a urine test based on cytokeratine expression. J Urol 1997; 157:339 (Abstract 1326).
14. Lance RS, Aldous WK, Blaser J, Thrasher JB. Telomerase activity in solid transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) and bladder washings. J Urol 1997; 157:338 (Abstract No. 1320). This abstract together with abstracts 46, 47, 1321, 1322 and 1323 in the same publication indicate the degree of interest and promise that exists with assays to detect telomerase activity in the urine. Undoubtedly, we will see more research on this specific test.
15. Sufrin G: Editorial. Advances in diagnostic and prognostic markers in bladder cancer. J Urol 1997; 157:83-94. This editorial objectively reviews three papers published in that issue of the journal. Two refer to new markers while the third emphasizes the diagnostic errors that can and do occur during histological examination.
16. Carpinito GA, Stadler WM, Briggman JV, Chodak GW, Church PA, Lamm DL et al. Urinary nuclear matrix protein as a marker for transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary. J Urol 1996; 156:1280-1285. In this article, the basis for the test and the technique for its performance are explained concisely. It also includes valuable references to additional studies with the same test.

Clinical evaluation of nuclear matrix protein 22 (NMP-22) in urine as a novel marker for urothelial cancer. Eur Urol 1997; 31:163-168. The NMP-22 has received considerable recent attention. All the reports are quite encouraging and attest to its value. The reader may obtain succinct but fresh and valuable information from several abstracts presented at the American Urological Association meeting in 1997: J Urol 1997; 157:336 (Abstracts 1314 and 1315).

31. Pode D, Golijanin D, Sherman Y, Lebensart P, Shapiro A. Immunostaging of Lewis X in cells from voided urine, cytopathology and ultrasound for noninvasive detection of bladder tumors. J Urol 1998; 159:389-393. This is an interesting study and, as mentioned before, a test worth further investigation. The enthusiasm of the authors is laudable but I do not share their views that the test may replace cystoscopy; certainly not at this point.
