Horm Metab Res 1998; 30:188-194. This study showed that a serotonin reuptake inhibitor caused premature fatigue, but branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) had no effect on time to exhaustion. The effect of serotonin reuptake inhibitors has been described before by others both in the rat and in humans. The data seem to suggest that serotoninergic activation may play a role in the experience of fatigue, but apparently serotoninergic activity cannot be modulated with the ingestion of BCAA.

    • Rohde T, MacLean DA, Pedersen BK. Effect of glutamine supplementation on changes in the immune system induced by repeated exercise. Med Sci Sports Exerc 1998; 30:856-862. This study shows that the temporary decline in immune function after exercise (the 'open time window' in which athletes are assumed to be more susceptible to catching a common cold or infection) does not disappear when the plasma glutamine concentration is normalized with glutamine supplements. This finding does not support the concept that a decline in plasma glutamine is causally related to the 'open time window'.
