    • The diol of styrylacetic acid has been observed in an oxidation catalyzed by Mn-tmtacn; however, it was explicitly stated that this product resulted from epoxide hydrolysis: V. C. Quee-Smith, L. DelPizzo, S. H. Jureller, J. L. Kerschner, R. Hage, Inorg. Chem. 1996, 35, 6461.

    • As suggested by a referee, this hypothesis can be tested by addition of oxalate to the heterogenized Mn catalyst. This completely stops the dihydroxylation, while some epoxidation still goes on.
