Upstream A-tracts increase bacterial promoter activity through interactions with the RNA polymerase alpha subunit
-
Aiyar SE, Gourse RL, Ross W: Upstream A-tracts increase bacterial promoter activity through interactions with the RNA polymerase alpha subunit Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1998, 95:14652-14657. Activation by an A-tract-containing sequence placed upstream of core promoters requires the carboxy-terminal domain of the RNAP α subunit. Activation is optimal when the A-tract is present close to the -35 hexamer. These characteristics suggest that A-tracts function as UP elements and do not activate through bending. This paper provides a mechanistic explanation for A-tract activation.

A temperature-dependent structural transition of DNA modulates accessibility of virF promoter to transcriptional repressor H-NS. EMBO J 1998, 17:7033-7043. The temperature-dependent regulation of the virF promoter has been reproduced in vitro. A protein-induced DNA bend increases the specificity of a prokaryotic enhancer-binding protein
-
Dworkin J, Ninfa AJ, Model P: A protein-induced DNA bend increases the specificity of a prokaryotic enhancer-binding protein. Genes Dev 1998, 12:894-900. IHF, which introduces a sharp bend on DNA, increases the specificity of activation by enhancer-binding proteins by two mechanisms: IHF enhances activation by the appropriate enhancer-binding protein but also inhibits DNA-looping-dependent activation by an inappropriate enhancer-binding protein.

Minus-strand origin of filamentous phage versus transcriptional promoters in recognition of RNA polymerase
-
70-RNAP to the minus strand origin of the filamentous phage viral single-stranded DNA and the low temperature dependence for RNA synthesis reside in the 'single-strandedness' of the -10 region. Mutational analysis suggests that the sigma subunit interacts directly with the nontemplate strand at the -10 hexamer.

-
Dai X, Rothman-Denes LB: Sequence and DNA structural determinants of N4 virion RNA polymerase-promoter recognition. Genes Dev 1998, 12:2782-2790.
