The most recent and complete structure of a lentivirus transmembrane protein (TM). The authors determined the solution structure of the portion of the SIV gp41 trimer located between the transmembrane region and the fusion sequence. They present a comparison with the structures of shorter regions of TM and a model for TM function in fusion that posits no dramatic conformational change.

The authors demon-strate the lack of icosahedral symmetry and the presence of locally ordered domains in the virions. Radial density analysis of HIV particles reveals the presence of separately folded domains in the Gag precursor protein.

J Virol 1997, 71:6582-6592. This article provides evidence for the modulation of matrix protein membrane binding properties by the myristate. The authors suggest a cleavage-induced conformational change and find no conclusive evidence that the charged surface is essential for Gag membrane binding.
