Immunohistochemical analysis using anti-c-kit, vimentin, and desmin antibodies revealed colocalization of these markers in an embryonic progenitor cell, which is common to ICC associated with Auerbach's plexus and longitudinal smooth muscle cells. Hence the non-neural origin of ICC was also supported by this study.

Dev Dyn 1998, 211:60-71. Evidence is provided for a role of kit signaling not during the embryonic but during postnatal developmental stages of ICC. In particular, kit receptor signaling was required for proliferation of ICC following day 5 after birth. Embryonic development of ICC was also studied, and it was concluded that smooth muscle cells and ICC develop from the same progenitor cell type.

Together with [23], which focuses on the role of ICC in neurotransmission, a comprehensive overview of ICC is provided.

This article shows that isolated ICC in culture exhibited spontaneous rhythmic inward current oscillations with properties that were consistent with a role of this current in generation of the electrical slow wave in tissue. Furthermore, isolated ICC had morphologic characteristics of ICC in tissue, including the presence of Kit mRNA as identified with the single-cell polymerase chain reaction technique.

This study provides an interesting hypothesis that stromal tumors differentiate into ICC. Strong evidence is provided for a role of the Kit gene in the development of the tumor. Whether the kit-positive cells can be identified as ICC remains speculative.

This paper, together with the critically important [37] and [55], provides convincing evidence for the presence of NK1 receptors on ICC, implying a role for substance P in modulating ICC function.
