Personal observation. Football is a highly masculinized activity in Uzbekistan, and one which the president has tried to co-opt for his political ends; the weekly newspaper Football has a large quote from Islam Karimov declaring lhat the time has come for Uzbek football to take its place in the world. Sadly, one notes the national side's poor performance in France '98 World Cup qualifiers.
