They demonstrated a specific activation of cardiac interstitial cells and postmitotic cardiomyocytes, and increased expression of platelet-derived growth factor in the interstitium and wall of intramyocardial arteries associated with the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor in hypertrophied arterial smooth muscle cells.

The conclusion is that in patients with evident congestive heart failure or ischaemic heart disease treated by haemodialysis, the administration of epoetin to raise haematocrit to normal values is not recommended.

In this study the authors evaluated the stiffness of arterial wall material in medium-sized muscular arteries of patients with ESRD. They showed that at the site of radial artery that is constantly devoid of atherosclerosis, the stiffness of the wall material is increased in chronic uraemia, independently of the level of BP. This result indicates the presence of generalized non-atheromatous vasculopathy in these patients.

In this prospective study the authors analysed the independent effect of total plasma homocysteine levels on the development of atherosclerotic outcomes in maintenance dialysis patients. They concluded that elevation of the plasma homocysteine levels found in haemodialysis patients contributes independently to their excess incidence of fatal and non-fatal cardiovascular outcomes.
