Mean weight of the female salmon that produced offspring with M74 was 6.9 kg compared to 8.1 kg for female salmon with the healthy offspring (P-value 0.203) The salmon were anaesthetized using MS222 (Sandoz Ltd Basel Switzerland) and the blood samples were drawn from the heart into heparinized glass tubes (Venoject, Terumo). The blood samples were separated into red blood cells and plasma by centrifugation prior to storage in a freezer (-20°C).

Comparison of the catches of salmon from River Dalälven and River Urneälven populations, from the tagging period 1985-1990 shows that 28% of Dalälven salmon (weight > 1kg) are caught in the Bothnian Sea whereas only 8% of the Umeälven salmon were caught in the same area. During the same period, 43% of the Dalälven salmon were caught in the southern part of the Baltic Sea whereas 68% of the Umeälven population was caught in the same area.
