Violence by people discharged from acute psychiatric inpatient facilities and others in the same neighborhoods

Steadman HJ, Mulvey EP, Monahan J, Robbins PC, Appelbaum PS, Grisso T, et al. Violence by people discharged from acute psychiatric inpatient facilities and others in the same neighborhoods. Arch Gen Psychiatry 1998; 55:393-401. Data from the influential MacArthur Violence Risk Assessment Study is presented. This research group has published extensively in this area. This particular paper is being utilized to support the controversial notion that patients with schizophrenia alone are no more dangerous than their neighbors in the community. However, methodologic problems weaken the conclusions.

Violence and severe mental illness: The effects of substance abuse and nonadherence to medication
-
Swartz MS, Swanson JW, Hiday VA, Borum R, Wagner HR, Burns BJ. Violence and severe mental illness: the effects of substance abuse and nonadherence to medication. Am J Psychiatry 1998; 155:226-231. This research group has published extensively in the field of mental disorder, substance abuse, and community violence. This report is based on data collected as part of a randomized clinical trial that examined the effectiveness of involuntary outpatient commitment and case management in reducing noncompliance with psychiatric treatment, and preventing relapse, rehospitalization, and other poor outcomes among the severely mentally ill.
