Integrin mediated short-term memory in Drosophila
-
The locus of the Volado mutation, which causes impaired olfactory associative memory in Drosophila, was found to encode two isoforms of a new type of integrin, α-integrin. The Volado gene product is expressed in the mushroom body and conditional expression of the Volado transgene in the volado mutants can rescue the memory impairment.

Expression of integrin associated protein gene associated with memory formation in rats
-
The PCR (polymerase chain reaction) differential display method was used to compare the total RNA isolated from the hippocampus of the rats that perform poorly versus those that perform well on an inhibitory avoidance learning task. Three cDNAs corresponding to differently spliced forms of integrin-associated protein (IAP) mRNA exhibited elevated expression in the hippocampus of the rats with good memory.

Allosteric modulation of AMPA-type glutamate receptors increases activity of the promoter for the neural cell adhesion molecule, N-CAM
-
Homologous recombination was used to insert the lacZ gene to disrupt the N-CAM gene and to express β-galactosidase under the control of the N-CAM promoter. Both in vivo treatment of the heterozygous mice and in vitro treatment of tissue slices from the heterozygous mice with an ampakine (an allosteric modulator of AMPA receptors) increased the expression of β-galactosidase. The effect of ampakine was reduced by an AMPA receptor agonist, CNQX (6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline-2,3-dione).

N-cadherin redistribution during synaptogenesis in hippocampal neurons
-
Immunolabeling showed that N-cadherin and β-catenin are present in hippocampal axons and dendrites before synapse formation and then cluster as synapses are formed. N-cadherin is expressed initially at all synaptic sites but rapidly becomes restricted to a subpopulation of excitatory synaptic sites. GABAergic synapses in mature cultures lack N-cadherin.
