The authors demonstrate a correlation between the VEGF content of different endometriotic lesions suggesting that after exfoliation and attachment of endometrial cells, high levels of VEGF provoke vascularization and facilitate viability of the red lesions. Lower levels of VEGF in black lesions explain the decrease in stromal vascularization, followed by fibrosis and inactivation of the implant.
