    • Titrations were performed by addition of calf thymus DNA (Sigma) to a 50 μM RuHex solution. The bound fraction of RuHex was determined using normal pulse voltammetry. Association constants and binding site sizes were determined using a nonlinear curve fit of the noncooperative, discrete site binding model of Carter and Bard to the data, ref 2a.

    • Using 34 Å/10 bases as the length and 20 Å as the diameter of double-stranded DNA, we calculate a footprint of 1700 Å/molecule for a 25mer duplex DNA lying flat on the surface, compared to a footprint of 314 Å/molecule for DNA oriented normal to the surface.
