The latest in a series of papers [8,9,12,29] describing the role of the Mpg1 hydrophobin in surface sensing during appressorium morphogenesis. This paper demonstrates that it is the ability of hydrophobins to undergo self-assembly that accounts for their role in appressorium formation and pathogenicity.

    • Adachii K, Hamer JE: Divergent cAMP signaling pathways regulate •• growth and pathogenesis in the rice blast fungus, Magnaporthe grisea. Plant Cell 1998, 10:1361-1373. In M. grisea cAMP signaling has roles in growth, morphogenesis and pathogenesis [15•]. The specificity of signaling for pathogenesis occurs at the level of PKA activity because a single point mutation in the PKA regulatory subunit gene, SUM1, can revert pleiotropic defects caused by mutations in the MAC1 adenylate cyclase gene.

The results here demonstrate that cAMP signaling in M. grisea may be transduced through a G protein alpha subunit. Interestingly, two other G protein alpha subunits appear completely dispensable for growth and pathogenesis in M. grisea.

    • Beckerman JL, Naider F, Ebbole DJ: Inhibition of pathogenicity of • the rice blast fungus by Saccharomyces cerevisiae α-factor. Science 1997, 276:1116-1119. The signaling pathways for mating in S. cerevisiae appear related to pathways important for appressorium formation in M. grisea [18]. This result is extended by the remarkable demonstration that a-factor can inhibit appressorium formation in mating-type dependent manner. The results also suggest some exciting possibilities for controlling fungal pathogens.
