J Virol 1997, 71:5268-5276. Using a mouse trigeminal explant model and reverse transcriptase PCR, the pattern of viral and cellular gene expression during reactivation was investigated. The induction of neuronal transcription factors such as Oct-1, c-Jun, c-Fos, and c-Myc was shown and early viral transcripts were detected before immediate-early transcripts, indicating that the neuronal lytic cycle may proceed in a unique way.

J Virol 1997, 71:5885-5893. This report, using LAT-minus mutants, provides evidence that the virus play an active role in downregulating productive infection during acute infection of sensory neurons. These observations were suggested as a mechanism which permits the virus to evade the host immune response and to reduce viral cytopathic effects, allowing neuronal survival and establishment of latency.

J Virol 1997, 71:5878-5884. The effect of a deletion mutation in the latency-associated transcript (LAT) locus on viral gene expression was analyzed in latently infected mouse trigeminal ganglia. The reduced expression of LAT resulted in reduced expression of ICP4 and thymidine kinase, which was taken to mean that LAT represses the accumulation of transcripts from two productive-cycle genes in latently infected mouse ganglia.
