19. Briefly, cross-sectional plots of autocovariance filtered images were evaluated quantitatively. The calculated averages were recalibrated as described in ref 8.
20. The autocovariace is calculated as the inverse 2-D Fourier transform of the product of Fourier transform and corresponding complex conjugate Fourier transform of the image. In contrast to Fourier "manual" filtering, this filtering eliminates the influence of the operator.

35. By rotation of the scan direction it was ensured that the lattice in air (which is concomitant with higher imaging forces) an oblique Lattice was imaged (a = 4.3 Å, b = 4.7 Å, a = 77°). This different lattice can probably be attributed to a tip-induced distortion.
