This study clearly demonstrates that LCPUFA study of healthy term infants is influenced not only by the dietary intake of preformed LCPUFA, but also by high formula contents of linolenic acid that seem to compete with incorporation of ω-3 into infantile lipids.

Milk type during mixed feeding: Contribution to serum cholesterol ester fatty acids in late infancy

Salo P, Viikari J, Rönnemaa T, Hämäläinen M, Jokinen E, Välikmäki I, et al. Milk type during mixed feeding: contribution to serum cholesterol ester fatty acids in late infancy. J Pediatr 1997; 130:110-116. In infants aged 7 months, milk contributes only approximately one-third of dietary energy but remains a major determinant of dietary fat quantity and quality, resulting in significantly lower serum LCPUFA levels in formula than in breast fed infants.
