Kaul R, McGeer A, Low DE, Green K, Schwartz B, Ontario Group A Streptococcal study, Simor AE. Population-based surveillance for group A Streptococcal necrotizing fasciitis: clinical features, prognostic indicators and microbiologic analysis of 77 cases. Am J Med 1997; 103:18-24. There was a marked increase in necrotizing fasciitis during the winter of 1994-1995 (5-fold increase) that was associated with M3 strain. Almost haff of the patients were not bacteraemic. The mortality rate was 34%, with some protection with the use of intravenous immunoglobulin.
