J Clin Psychiatry 1996; 57:142-146. This is not a large study, but it suggests that vigorous mood stabilizing treatment can replace neuroleptics in many psychotic manic episodes.

This is part of a series that is among the best studies of what really seems to happen in long-term treatment. The results are sobering.

Most patients doing well at 5 years did well at 10 years, but the predictors of late nonresponse are interesting in terms of the course of illness and the need to prevent early episodes.
