Are sociodemographic factors predictive of preterm birth? A reappraisal of the 1958 British Perinatal Mortality Survey
-
Wildschut Hajo IJ, Nas T, Golding J. Are sociodemographic factors predictive of preterm birth? A reappraisal of the 1958 British Perinatal Mortality Survey. Br J Obstet Gynaecol 1997; 104:57-63. A reassessment of the data obtained from all births in England, Scotland and Wales during the first week of March 1958 has revealed that, at that time, sociodemographic factors did not have a substantial impact on the risk of preterm birth.

The Preterm Prediction Study: Maternal stress is associated with spontaneous preterm birth at less than thirty-five weeks' gestation. Am J Obstet Gynecol 1996; 175:1286-1292. Antibiotic therapy for reduction of infant morbidity after preterm premature rupture of the membranes
-
Mercer BM, Miodovnik M, Thurnau GR, Goldenberg RL, Das AF, Ramsey RD, et al. Antibiotic therapy for reduction of infant morbidity after preterm premature rupture of the membranes. JAMA 1997; 278:989-995. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial has shown that a 48 h course of intravenous ampicillin and erythromycin followed by 5 days of oral amoxicillin and erythromycin in women with preterm premature rupture of the membranes between 24 and 32 weeks of gestation leads to a significant decrease in the incidence of neonatal respiratory distress and necrotizing enterocolitis, as well as prolongation of the pregnancy.

Placental histology and clinical characteristics of patients with preterm premature rupture of membranes
-
Arias F, Victoria A, Cho K, Kraus F. Placental histology and clinical characteristics of patients with preterm premature rupture of membranes. Obstet Gynecol1997; 89:265-271. Careful analysis of the placentas of women who give birth after pPROM shows that evidence of histological chorioamnionitis is present in only 43% of cases, with the majority of these being from those women giving birth before 30 weeks' gestation.

Changing prognosis for babies of less than 28 weeks' gestation in the north of England between 1983 and 1994
-
Tin W, Wariyar U, Hey E. Changing prognosis for babies of less than 28 weeks' gestation in the north of England between 1983 and 1994. BMJ 1997; 314:107-111. An analysis of perinatal outcomes for all births between 1983 and 1994 at 22 to 27 completed weeks' gestation in the north of England has shown a steady improvement in survival with no significant change in the rate of disability among survivors.
