    • Cope DK, Impastato WK, Cohen MW, Downey JM. Volatile anesthetics protect the ischemic rabbit myocardium from infarction. Anesthesiology 1997; 86:699-709. This is an interesting study examining the role of inhaled anesthetics in protection against ischemic-reperfusion injury using both in-vivo and in-vitro rabbit heart models. The authors also emphasize the role of adenosine receptors and ATP sensitive potassium channels in the mechanism of the protection offered by the use of volatile anesthetic agents.

Different effects of halothane, isoflurane and sevoflurane on sarcoplasmic reticulum of vascular smooth muscle in dog mesenteric artery. Acta Anaesthesiol Scand 1997; 41:376-380. These investigators studied the effects of different volatile anesthetics on contractility of isolated canine mesenteric artery and calcium ion loading using different concentrations of calcium in the media and caffeine stimulation. The data indicate that calcium loading into the sarcoplasmic reticulum is affected by the use of volatile anesthetics.
