Volatile anesthetics protect the ischemic rabbit myocardium from infarction
-
Cope DK, Impastato WK, Cohen MW, Downey JM. Volatile anesthetics protect the ischemic rabbit myocardium from infarction. Anesthesiology 1997; 86:699-709. This is an interesting study examining the role of inhaled anesthetics in protection against ischemic-reperfusion injury using both in-vivo and in-vitro rabbit heart models. The authors also emphasize the role of adenosine receptors and ATP sensitive potassium channels in the mechanism of the protection offered by the use of volatile anesthetic agents.

Role of adenosine triphosphate-sensitive potasssium channels in coronary vasodilation by halothane, isoflurane and enflurane

Anesthesiology 1997; 86:448-458. These researchers investigated the effects of different anesthetics on isolated coronary arteries and calculated the vascular resistance and blood flow in the presence of a blocker of ATP sensitive potassium channels to reveal the role of these channels in the underlying mechanism of anesthetic-induced coronary vasodilation.

Different effects of halothane, isoflurane and sevoflurane on sarcoplasmic reticulum of vascular smooth muscle in dog mesenteric artery

Different effects of halothane, isoflurane and sevoflurane on sarcoplasmic reticulum of vascular smooth muscle in dog mesenteric artery. Acta Anaesthesiol Scand 1997; 41:376-380. These investigators studied the effects of different volatile anesthetics on contractility of isolated canine mesenteric artery and calcium ion loading using different concentrations of calcium in the media and caffeine stimulation. The data indicate that calcium loading into the sarcoplasmic reticulum is affected by the use of volatile anesthetics.
