The fraction of aerosol with a suitable size for aerosol delivery has been referred to in the past as "respirable fraction," and more recently it has been agreed to use "fine particle fraction" (International Society for Aerosols in Medicine Focused Symposium: Towards Meaningful Laboratory Tests for Evaluation of Pharmaceutical Aerosols, Puerto Rico, Jan 29-31, 1997). It is important to note that the range of sizes used to define the fine particle fraction depends on the device used for measuring the size of the aerosol particles, e.g., the size cutoff of the various stages of the impactor or liquid impinger used.
