A cross-sectional study in 123 Nicaraguan children reported a higher prevalence of the infection in infants, compared with children aged 2-4 years suggesting spontaneous loss of infection. No association was found with chronic diarrhoea or malnutrition.

In this Swedish cohort H. pylori serology was more often positive at 2 years (10.1 %) compared with 11 years (3.0%), indicating early acquisition and spontaneous loss also occurs in developed countries.

A population-based study from Colombia suggest that nutritional factors such as fruits and vegetables with a high intake of vitamin C and beta-carotene may play a protective role against H. pylori.

In a cross-sectional study in Italy, H. pylori infection was associated with growth delay in older children even after adjusting for socioeconomic conditions and household overcrowding.

High sensitivity and specificity of the urea breath test were shown, when the test was applied after an overnight fast and citric acid was given to delay gastric emptying.

One week therapy with colloidal bismuth subcitrate, metronidazole and clarithromycin cleared the infection in 21 out of 22 children. The drugs of the complicated regime were dispensed in a 'Redidose' box to optimize compliance.

A two week therapy including metronidzole, omeprazole and clarithromycin was successful in 14 out of 15 Helicobacter pyton-infected children, 11 of whom had a duodenal ulcer.
