    • Gabay L, Seger R, Shilo B-Z: In situ activation pattern of Drosophila EGF receptor pathway during development. Science 1997, 277:1103-1106. Uses an antibody that recognises only the diphospho (activated) form of MAP kinase to map the activation of EGFR throughout development. Confirms that graded activation is seen in the ventral embryonic ectoderm and expanding rings of activation in the developing ommatidia in the eye -as predicted by earlier work. Highlights the value of the antibody as a tool.

Development 1997, 124:4837-4845. By focusing on two rows of cells in the embryonic epidermis, this paper shows that the decision to differentiate as naked cuticle or denticle depends on competition between Wingless and EGFR signalling. Argos is a key regulator of this process.

    • Interactions between the EGF receptor and DPP pathways establish distinct cell fates in the tracheal placodes
    • Wappner P, Gabay L, Shilo BZ: Interactions between the EGF receptor and DPP pathways establish distinct cell fates in the tracheal placodes. Development 1997, 124:4707-4716. Describes the requirement for EGFR and Dpp signalling for the determination of different subsets of tracheal founder cells. An antagonistic relationship between the pathways is revealed.

    • Opposing BMP and EGF signalling pathways converge on the TGF-beta family mediator Smad1
    • Kretzschmar M, Doody J, Massagué J: Opposing BMP and EGF signalling pathways converge on the TGF-beta family mediator Smad1. Nature 1997, 389:618-622. Activated MAP kinase can phosphorylate Smad-1, the TGF-β transducer, and thereby prevent its translocation to the nucleus. This is a clear example of an antgonistic interaction between two pathways occurring by direct interaction of the transduction components.
