    • note
    • Measuring the collaborations' performance can be quite difficult. Whereas short-term benefits can be measured, to a certain extent, through economic and financial results, assessing long-term benefits is complex. This is related to the difficulties found in evaluating the value of competencies (see, for example, [28]). It is not the aim of this paper to deal with this problem in depth. Here, a qualitative assessment was made. Managers were asked to express a qualitative evaluation of the collaboration's success, pointing to evidence of the long-term benefits (the new competencies acquired) obtained through the partnership.

    • note
    • A good partner is one which is strongly dependent on the firm's competencies, i.e. the partner who, to achieve its own objectives, needs to access firm's resources which he neither possesses nor can develop autonomously.
