Serotonin and aggressive motivation in crustaceans: Altering the decision to retreat
-
Huber R, Smith K, Delago A, Isaksson K, Kravitz EA: Serotonin •• and aggressive motivation in crustaceans: altering the decision to retreat Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1997, 94:5939-5942. This study demonstrates the value of a quantitative analysis of behavior. After a hierarchy is established, subordinate animals will not engage in agonistic encounters. Upon serotonin injection, however, subordinate animals are willing to fight again. The statistical analysis of the behavior allows the conclusion that it is fighting behavior per se that is influenced, and not some fragment of that behavior, such as turning on a motor program that says, for example, 'walk forward'.

Neuronal adaptations to changes in the social dominance status of crayfish
-
Yeh S-R, Musolf BE, Edwards DH: Neuronal adaptations to •• changes in the social dominance status of crayfish. J Neurosci 1997, 17:697-708. This paper is one of the first to show that changes in social status are accompanied by selective changes at specific synaptic sites in the nervous system. The results are thoroughly described in the text of this review.

Vasopressin/serotonin interactions in the anterior hypothalamus control aggressive behavior in golden hamsters
-
Ferris CF, Melloni RH Jr, Koppel G, Perry KW, Fuller RW, •• Delville Y: Vasopressin/serotonin interactions in the anterior hypothalamus control aggressive behavior in golden hamsters. J Neurosci 1997, 17:4331-4040. In this paper, and a series of related papers, the authors present convincing evidence of the involvement of the peptide arginine vasopressin (AVP) in aggressive behavior in hamsters. When microinjected into the anterior hypothalamus, this peptide increases several measures of offensive aggression. Fluoxetine prevents this increase, and this and other data suggest that serotonergic presynaptic mechanisms may play a role in modulating the activity of AVP neurons.

Altered excitability of the crayfish lateral giant escape reflex during agonistic encounters
-
Krasne FB, Shamasian A, Kulkami R: Altered excitability of •• the crayfish lateral giant escape reflex during agonistic encounters. J Neurosci 1997, 17:692-699. Although no direct involvement of serotonergic mechanisms is presented in this paper, the studies show nicely that changes in status also change other aspects of neuronal functioning. The excitability of the lateral giant escape reflex falls during agonistic encounters, more substantially in subordinate than in dominant animals. The authors suggest that this apparently paradoxical effects results from subordinate animals using nongiant escape pathways in preference to purely reflexive giant pathways.
