    • -4 M 1 with 2 indicated a 1:1 stoichiometry for the pseudorotaxane 1·2. The electrochemical reduction data fully support the presence of only 1:1 species. Because of the high degree of association between 1 and 2, it was not possible to determine the binding constant by means of a spectrophotometric titration as in the case of 1·3. Such a binding constant was determined by monitoring the competition between 2 and a luminescent electron-donor wire based on 1,5-dioxynaphthalene (ref. [2f]) for the cavity of the tetracationic cyclophane 1.

    • Since the association constant between 1 and 3 is much smaller than that between 1 and 2, the electrochemical experiments carried out on 1·3 have been performed in the presence of an excess of 1 for oxidation and an excess of 3 for reduction studies

    • During the preparation of this manuscript, Bryce et al. (ref. [23] ) have reported cyclic voltammetric studies on the adduct 1·3 and have shown by spectroelectrochemical experiments that oxidation of the adduct causes decomplexation. Our results for 1·3 confirm the data of these authors and extend the concept of dethreading/rethreading to the reductive-oxidative cycle
