note

The calculations of Yamasaki et al. indicate that the activation energy for dimer formation is approximately equal to the activation energy for monomer diffusion; when two diffusing monomers meet, there is no additional energy barrier to dimer formation [9]. Once formed, the dimers are quite stable, as demonstrated in Section 3.

Because a measurement of the free-terrace hop rate is desired, only sites that are not adjacent to surface features are included in the analysis.

The asymmetric uncertainty in the room-temperature rate is caused by the application of Poisson statistics to the small number of events observed.

A test confirmed that at high temperature, the hop rate is insensitive to tip field variations. For a sample biased (1 V with respect to the tip, variation of the tunneling current from 0.03 to 0.2 nA produced only negligible changes in the hop rate at ∼460 K. All STM images and tracking data were acquired at bias magnitudes ranging from 0.5 to 2.5 V and a tunneling current of ∼0.05 nA.

The thermocouple on the sample also allowed us to verify that the probe does not alter the sample temperature by more than 1 K during a normal probe measurement. Even when the probe and sample temperatures differed by 115 K, an unrealistically large mismatch, the sample temperature did not change more than 3 K.

We recently obtained a preprint of a more extensive experiment by Swartzentruber, in which the dimer free-energy surface in the vicinity of a variety of surface features is mapped out. He measures a free-energy decrease of 50 ± 15 meV at a site bordering a type-A step.
