Impaired eye tracking correlated negatively with metabolism in frontal eye fields and angular gyrus (which may also be involved in regulation of SPEM), and positively with metabolism in the head of the caudate. No significant correlations were observed for thalamus or primary visual cortex.

    • Williams GV, Goldman-Rakic PS: Modulation of memory fields by dopamine D1 receptors in prefrontal cortex. Nature 1995, 376:572-575. The first study to combine intracortical recording with local pharmacological manipulation. The authors demonstrated strong association between the functioning of neurons in monkey prefrontal cortex and visuospatial memory performance. D1 antagonists, at a low dose, enhanced prefrontal activation in an agonist-reversible fashion. However, higher doses inhibited all activity, indicating a narrow effective dose range. D2 receptor manipulation was relatively less effective.

Arch Gen Psychiatry 1995, 52:805-818. A post-mortem study of brains from 16 schizophrenic individuals, compared with 19 controls. Two brain regions were evaluated: area 9 (prefrontal) and area 17 (occipital). Similar abnormalities, including increased neuronal density and (nonsignificantly) decreased cortical thickness were observed in both regions, indicating that decreased dendritic arborization of cortical pyramidal neurons may be the anatomic substrate for information processing dysfunction in schizophrenia.
