This double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study demonstrated an increase in exercise ejection fraction and end-diastolic volume in normals; whereas patients with CHF had a sharp increase in heart rate during exercise, while ejection fraction did not change. After digoxin treatment, the CHF group had a heart rate response and increase in exercise ejection fraction comparable to normals.

Control Clin Trials 1996, 17:77-97. This landmark project examined the effect of digoxin on mortality and hospitalization in a randomized, double-blind study. Digoxin, although not reducing overall mortality, reduced the rate of hospitalization both overall and for worsening heart failure.

Heart 1996, 76:223-231. A study examining the effect of Pimobendan on exercise capacity at 24 weeks of follow-up. Though the medication increased exercise duration by 6% at both test doses, the drug failed to improve functional classification, quality-of-life measures, or peak oxygen uptake. Furthermore, an insignificant but worrisome 1.8-fold increase in all-cause mortality was demonstrated.
