2. Andreason NC: Linking mind and brain in the study of mental Illnesses: a project for a scientific psychopathology. Science 1997, 275:1586-1593. In this paper, the author convincingly argues that the gap between the mental and the biological (mind and brain) has to be, and can be, overcome within a neuroscience framework. Psychopathology can thus be scientific, as is illustrated using examples from schizophrenia and depression research.
3. Jeffery KJ, Reid IC: Modifiable neuronal connections: an overview for psychiatrists. Am J Psychiatry 1997, 154:156-164. This is a brief account of some principles of neural networks at an introductory level. The authors focus on plasticity and cover some aspects of the neurobiology of long term potentiation, i.e. the systematic change of synaptic strength caused by experience. These ideas are applied to the psychopathology of delusions and amnesia.

This edited volume based upon a workshop held at the University of Maryland in June 1995 provides an up to date account of the field of neural modelling of brain and psychopathology. It covers memory and language disorders, as well as neurological and psychiatric diseases such as stroke, multi-infarct dementia, epilepsy, Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases, schizophrenia and depression. It is, therefore, an indispensible book for anyone interested in the field of modeling pathology.

This was the first study to demonstrate that functional magnetic resonance imaging can be used to identify brain regions involved in the production of obsessive compulsive disorder symptoms. The authors tailored a symptom provocation scheme to the subjectively experienced psychopathological phenomena of each patient and demonstrated that certain frontal, temporal and subcortical structures become active when obsessions are present.
