After systemic treatment with griseofulvin or ketoconazole, or both, relapse occurred in most patients.

One-hundred and fifty-two children aged between 2 and 17 years with dermatophyte infections of skin, hair or nail were treated with terbinafine for 1-28 weeks (median 4 weeks). Ninety-three per cent were cured and no serious adverse events were reported.

Br J Dermatol 1996, 135:86-88. The authors carried out a large study of 161 children with tinea capitis, mostly caused by T. violaceum. Cure rates after 12 weeks were between 74 and 85%. Four weeks of treatment was superior to 1 week in terms of mycological cure (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference, however, between the three groups.

Also, there was agreement in the detection of in-vivo fluconazole resistant strains by the three methods.
61. 3H labelled fluconazole. Some fluconazole resistant C. albicans isolates exhibited up to a 10-fold increase in mRNA levels for a recently cloned ABC transporter gene, indicating that one mechanism of resistance arises from overexpression of an efflux pump.
