Imbalance of immune responses in patients with chronic and widespread fungal skin infection
-
Leibovici V, Evron R, Axelrod O, Westerman M, Shalit M, Barak V, Frankenburg S: Imbalance of immune responses in patients with chronic and widespread fungal skin infection. Clin Exp Dermatol 1995, 20:390-394. Seventeen patients with chronic widespread T. rubrum infection lacked a specific, delayed type hypersensitivity response to fungal antigens. The patients were not atopic but had high levels of nonspecific IgE and T. rubrum specific IgG4, suggesting a Th2 dominant immune response. After systemic treatment with griseofulvin or ketoconazole, or both, relapse occurred in most patients.

Br J Dermatol 1996, 135:86-88. The authors carried out a large study of 161 children with tinea capitis, mostly caused by T. violaceum. Cure rates after 12 weeks were between 74 and 85%. Four weeks of treatment was superior to 1 week in terms of mycological cure (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference, however, between the three groups.

Molecular probes for diagnosis of fungal infections
-
Sandhu GS, Kline BC, Stockman L, Roberts GD: Molecular probes for diagnosis of fungal infections. J Clin Microbiol 1995, 33:2913-2919. Significant portions of the 285 rRNA gene of 50 fungi were sequenced. Analysis of the variable regions of the 285 rRNA gene from these fungi led to the synthesis of 21 highly specific oligonucleotide probes for Candida and Aspergillus spp.

-
Espinel-lngroff A, Rodríguez-Tudela JL, Martínez-Suárez JV: Comparison of two alternative microdilution procedures with the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards Reference Macrodilution Method M27-P for in vitro testing of fluconazole-resistant and susceptible isolates of Candida albicans. J Clin Microbiol 1995, 33:3154-3158. Excellent agreement of 97.79% was demonstrated between the reference method M 27-P and the two microdilution methods (the microdilution colorimetric method with Alamar Blue and the microdilution spectrophotometric MIC 80% method with RPMI medium with 2% glucose. Also, there was agreement in the detection of in-vivo fluconazole resistant strains by the three methods.

Mechanisms of resistance to azole antifungal agents in Candida albicans isolates from AIDS patients involve specific multidrug transporters
-
3H labelled fluconazole. Some fluconazole resistant C. albicans isolates exhibited up to a 10-fold increase in mRNA levels for a recently cloned ABC transporter gene, indicating that one mechanism of resistance arises from overexpression of an efflux pump.
