Nadolol plus isosorbide mononitrate compared with sclerotherapy for the prevention of variceal rebleeding

Villanueva C, Balanzo J, Novella MT, Soriano G, Sainz S, Torras X, Cusso •• X, Guarner C, Vilardell F: Nadolol plus isosorbide mononitrate compared with sclerotherapy for the prevention of variceal rebleeding. N Engl J Med 1996, 334:1624-1629. This well-designed study points out the usefulness of combining a drug that decreases portal flow (nadolol) with a drug that decreases resistance (isosorbide mononitrate) in the treatment of portal hypertension. It also exemplifies the usefulness of measuring hepatic venous pressure gradient in assessing response to pharmacologic therapy.
