Neurophenomenology: A methodological remedy for the hard problem
-
Varela FJ: Neurophenomenology: a methodological remedy for the hard problem. J Consciousness Stud 1996, 3:330-349. While positoning himself squarely in the continental phenomenological camp. Varela finds first hand experience to be an 'irreducible field of phenomena.' This paper gives a succint summary of phenomenological method. Embodied cognitive science replaces previous representationalist models of an isolated mind (and the corollary inner/outer distinction) by demonstrating the 'mutual overlapping' of mind and world. Varela admits that we are still in very early stages of such a cooperative, interdisciplinary approach, but its adoption requires a radical expansion of how we view science.

Research in psychopathology: Epistemological issues
-
Parnas J, Bovet P: Research in psychopathology: epistemological issues. Compr Psychiatry 1995, 36:167-181. The authors criticize the tacit assumptions of representationalist theories of mind as they have come to inform current psychiatric research and thinking. Connected to this objectivist epistemology is a realist ontology: there is a true, pre-given reality, independent of any observer but knowable by us. Alternative nonrepresentational views of cognition are still not systematic and many of their provisional claims require empirical validation. These involve embodied, biologic, connectionist, hermeneutic and self-organizing aspects of cognition. The authors caution that the prevailing tendency to simplify psychopathology for the sake of reliability may actually (in the long run) impede biologic and other 'etiologic' research.

Moving forward on the problems of consciousness
-
Chalmers DJ: Moving forward on the problems of consciousness. J Consciousness Stud 1997, 4:3-46. The author responds to his critics. The Journal of Consciousness Studies has devoted several special issues to the debate concerning Chalmers' 'hard problem.' Chalmers goes on to situate consciousness in the natural order: he postulates experience as a fundamental feature of nature alongside the more conventional ones such as space, time, mass and charge.

Lumps and bumps: Kantian faculty psychology, phrenology, and twentieth century classification
-
Radden J: Lumps and bumps: Kantian faculty psychology, phrenology, and twentieth century classification. Philos Psychiatr Psychol 1996, 3:1-14. Kantian faculty psychology is found to influence the nineteenth century phrenological mapping of functions in the brain and ultimately Kraeplin's nosological division between manic-depressive psychosis and dementia praecox: this division, which haunts Western classificational systems (DSM and ICD) but is found to be absent in other taxonomies of mental disorder around the world, is based on the dualistic separation of cognition and affect (as psychologicl faculties). Oddly, Radden neglects Wundt, whom Kraeplin himself cites as source for his psychological views, in her otherwise stimulating conceptual-historical analysis.

Narrative, self and other: The temporal restructuring and healing of traumatic memories
-
Edited by Zahavi D. The Hague: Kluwer Academic Publishers; in press
-
Mishara AL: Narrative, self and other: the temporal restructuring and healing of traumatic memories. In Self-awareness, timeconsciousness and other minds. Edited by Zahavi D. The Hague: Kluwer Academic Publishers; 1997 (in press). A phenomenological account of dissociation as the internal 'splitting' of the field of consciousness into contemporaneously occurring first and third (external) person perspectives. Relying on Terr's distinction between Type I (single below) and type II (chronic, repeated) trauma victims, it is hypothesized that only the latter develop a dissociative field organization as a result of a long history of rehearsal. Such rehearsal serves to block the mnemic encoding of traumata into autobiographical memory; this accounts for the hypermnesia/amnesia paradox of some post-traumatic stress disorder, borderline and dissociative patients. The active confrontation of emotionally conditioned, dissociated memory fragments in a narrative therapy may help to integrate them into the more voluntarily retrievable autobiographical memory.
