It is remarkable how long it took for the original data of Harrington et al. [61] to be confirmed, and had it not been for BSE this may never have happened. How this protein gets into the cerebrospinal fluid is unknown. It may reflect cerebral tissue damage, because positive results were found in stroke patients and some with herpes encephalitis. If so, the changes may only develop late in CJD and would not be helpful for early diagnosis.
