Antigenic mimicry between Helicobacter pylori and gastric mucosa in the pathogenesis of body atrophic gastritis
-
Negrini R, Savio A, Poiesi C, Appelmelk BJ, Buffoli F, Paterlini A, Cesari P, Graffeo M, Vaira D, Franzini G: Antigenic mimicry between Helicobacter pylori and gastric mucosa in the pathogenesis of body atrophic gastritis. Gastroenterology 1996, 111:655-665. Study suggests the existence of autoantibodies recognizing canaliculi and microbe, supporting the molecular mimicry concept. Strains from patients with non-atrophic gastritis often did not express Lewis antigens, suggestive for a pathogenic role of Lewis x/y mimicry.

Molecular mimicry between Helicobacter pylori and the host
-
Appelmelk BJ, Negrini N, Moran AP, Kuipers EJ: Molecular mimicry between Helicobacter pylori and the host. Trend Microbiol 1997, 5:70-73. Review focuses on the role of LPS mimicry in H. pylori-associated autoimmunity, discusses mimicry between H. pylori polypeptides (e.g. various P-type ATPases) and host, and evalutes mechanisms by which host-reactive but H. pylori-non-reactive autoantibodies may arise, and argues for a role of H. pylori in the initiation of autoimmune gastritis/pernicious anemia.
