Gastroenterology 1996, 111:655-665. Study suggests the existence of autoantibodies recognizing canaliculi and microbe, supporting the molecular mimicry concept. Strains from patients with non-atrophic gastritis often did not express Lewis antigens, suggestive for a pathogenic role of Lewis x/y mimicry.

Review focuses on the role of LPS mimicry in H. pylori-associated autoimmunity, discusses mimicry between H. pylori polypeptides (e.g. various P-type ATPases) and host, and evalutes mechanisms by which host-reactive but H. pylori-non-reactive autoantibodies may arise, and argues for a role of H. pylori in the initiation of autoimmune gastritis/pernicious anemia.
